We had visitors again this morning. The Sandhill Cranes are back from their long migration. We believe they are part of the group that spends their summers here on our farm. There has been 5 for a number of years now, but these could be 2 of the 5. They traveled on over to the sheep pen, and last year's one pair always did wander around the sheep, up the drive, over past the chicken coop and then on to the hayfields. We like to think we are good land stewards and care about the wildlife that's called this place home far longer than the years we've been here.
Do you like an Oatmeal colored fleece? Wouldn't you know it, one of my unregistered ewes has given us a beautiful Musket ewe lamb. A week old, she is just lovely, complete with wool on the forehead. She is perhaps out of my 5th or 6th generation ewe - a good 'working' mother. She's also a devoted mother, with a spritely little girl that came into this world and went Tah Dah! She should have a fleece that some spinner will just love next year!

OK, here is my problem....What color is the dam? Is she grey...is she modified....is she a pattern?
This daughter is born very light. I had an Ag mioget mother once that had lambs this color.
I would love to hold her and look at her fleece...but you will have to help with more photos...and maybe more descriptive terms.
Will do! Mom is there in the photo with her...sort of a musket colored body, but her legs and face are much darker than her daughters and more towards a black than a brown/moorit like her daughter's legs. Fleece shows taupe at the skin, could be just strong phaeo on the ends?
Hmm, the dam looks Ag grey from the wee bit of her I can see, and the lamb looks more white with phaeo than musket, especially since she has dusky pink nose leather. (Lois says the color of the nose leather is key.) Actually, she looks a lot like a "mystery lamb" Bill Stearman got this spring that he's named Twist. But what do I know; you've been having lambs a lot longer than I have! If you want to see my musket ram with oatmeal fleece, I just featured him in today's post.
Well, she's gray at the armpits and at the base of her fleece. Her dam is gray but a weird gray...her legs are gray at first glance but they have a brown shade to them. I'll get a shot of her parted fleece and put it up, maybe we can figure this one out! I have a registered musket here too. :-)
ok - I went out without the camera, silly me, and really dug into the fleece...it's a cream color. Not gray, definately cream. And not white by any means. Her skin is apricot...
Like Michelle, I noticed the resemblance to Bill Stearman's mystery lamb too. It would be nice if she stays that beautiful color, but I'll bet she fades to a cream color, especially if she's Ag. Of course, what do I know? LOL Keep us posted.
